Hello, I’m Andre. I’m Cofounder of FunCrowds, an innovative mobile promotional platform. This is my personal website where I write about things that I find interesting. I like gadgets, the internets, and how technology shapes our lives. I cheer for Virginia Tech Hokies and Michigan Wolverines. Sometimes I also write about Indonesia (where I’m from) and Singapore (where I live). In my spare time I read non-fiction books, travel, or read RSS feeds on the iPad.

You can email me at dregar [at] gmail dot com. You can also find me at Twitter, Friendfeed, and other social network sites below. I share articles that I like here. If you’d like to connect with me on Facebook, please message me first so I know who you are. Thanks!

Andre P.

I truly believe that money can buy happiness if you spend it on the right things. This is an interesting video where the speaker talks about (spoiler alert) using money for giving and donation. Another example: I spent extra money to get a place closer to my workplace, so I can shorten my commute and have more time with my family. That was one of the best decisions I have ever made.
One item that keeps appearing in my new year resolution, year after year, is “to be present”. That’s why this article resonates so much with me.

The article gives 3 reasons why it’s so hard to just experience the moment, rather than trying to record it: Because we are wired to hoard, because we crave recognition from our peers, and because it’s now easier than ever. That’s spot on and the reason why mobile apps of social networking services are huge.

What People Think Success Looks Like Vs. When was the last time you went to a store to buy music? Does anyone have a secretary anymore? When was the last time you went into a bank and talked to an actual person?

The pattern I’ve seen for many people new to iOS is a rush to try a bunch of apps and then never use most of them again. There’s a large market for people who just want the core ten apps executed even better. I’d be happy to trade my iPhone for a N9, if that core experience was stronger.

Although most people do exactly what DHH wrote after they purchase their smart phones, most people don’t think that way before they make the purchase. There are many factors that influence our purchasing decisions, including those outside of common sense — that’s why Apple has been so successful making advertisements that appeal to our emotions. One of the reasons I bought my iPhone is the large support the platform gets from the ecosystem (developers, retailers, etc.), which gives me a sense of security that the platform will last.

Having said that, going back to the “core ten apps” that DHH mentioned, mine are the following (alphabetically ordered):

Camera+

Evernote
