Facebook improvements that I’d like to see from the Friendfeed acquisition

Facebook acquired Friendfeed in what many think is a move to grab its talent and technology. I’m hoping Facebook will incorporate some of Friendfeed’s strengths:

  • Better Highlighting and Hiding. In Facebook, there is a Highlight section on the right side of the front page, but nobody knows how the items are picked. What’s worse, if you disagree with Facebook’s picks, there’s no way for you to take the items off the Highlight section. On the other hand, in Friendfeed, posts that are “liked” or commented on gets promoted up so you will see them more often in your feed. In case you don’t like these items, Friendfeed’s “hide” feature is also more powerful than Facebook’s.
  • Theme customization. Friendfeed has allowed different themes on their pages for a while now, and today they even introduced a way for users to create a custom theme. Themes are an elegant solution as it allows personalization but limits users from going crazy (think most MySpace pages). Facebook can use a refresh from their blue-and-grey pages.
  • Better options to share items. The Friendfeed bookmarklet is way better than Facebook’s (attach multiple pictures, easier commenting, etc.). Friendfeed also imports from a lot more services than Facebook.

I’m leaving out improved search as Facebook already announced that they will do that. I’m hoping, however, that Friendfeed’s excellent search capability will make Facebook’s even better.
