There is a lot of backlash on this #iamageek video. Geeks, what’s with the elitism? The fact that non-geeks consider it cool to be geeky should be taken positively.

soupsoup:

It isn’t exactly news that a good deal of people, especially in social media, are co-opting geek culture for credibility and profit.

Any real geek who saw this video would laugh their ass off at these people.

Some of these people are real geeks, Leo Laporte, Kevin Rose, Kevin Pereira and Alex Albrect may not spend much time in IRC channels these days but I suspect they paid their dues when they were young.

Shira Lazar, MC Hammer, Kevin Pollack, iJustine, and Julia Fucking Allison? Give me a break. Your credibility goes way out the window when you’re throwing in people who decided it would be a good career move to align themselves with geek culture. I would bet dollars to donuts none of them were coding, scripting, tinkering, and hacking in their formative years.

Having a twitter account doesn’t make you a geek. Making a video about having a twitter account however does make you a social media douchebag.
